Damp and mould: spot it early

Condensation gets worse in winter. Here is how to keep it in check.

Condensation is the most common cause of mould at home, and it gets worse in winter when windows stay shut.

Three in ten households report condensation, damp or mould at home, rising to 46% of private renters.

Everyday habits

  • Open windows a little or use extractor fans when cooking, showering and drying clothes.
  • Wipe away condensation from windows in the morning.
  • Leave a gap between furniture and outside walls.

Look outside too

Leaking gutters, cracked render and blocked air bricks can all let damp in.

If you rent

Report damp or mould to your landlord in writing. Since 27 October 2025, Awaab’s Law has required social landlords to investigate dangerous damp and mould within 10 working days. Read about Awaab’s Law.
