Most homes lose heat through the roof, walls, floors and the gaps around doors and windows. Small fixes add up. Savings below are Energy Saving Trust estimates for a typical home in Great Britain.
Loft
Check the depth of your loft insulation. If you can see the tops of the joists, it needs topping up.
Only 42% of homes in England have 200mm or more of loft insulation.
English Housing Survey 2024 to 2025Walls
If your home has cavity walls, ask whether they’ve been filled. Solid walls can be insulated inside or out. About a third of an uninsulated home’s heat escapes through the walls, and cavity wall insulation usually pays for itself in five years or less.
Draughts
Use draught strips on doors and windows, a brush or cover on the letterbox, and a chimney balloon in fireplaces you don’t use. Draught-proofing can save around £55 a year, and blocking an unused chimney about £45 more.
Keep the air moving
Don’t block air bricks, trickle vents or extractor fans. Homes need some fresh air to stay dry.
