Outside jobs before the storms
Gutters, roofs, drains, pipes and fences: get them sorted while the weather is mild.
Gutters and downpipes
Clear leaves and moss so rain runs away from the walls. Use a stable ladder with someone holding it, or hire a professional.
Roof
Look from the ground with binoculars for slipped or missing tiles and damaged flashing. Don’t climb on the roof yourself.
Drains
Clear grates and gullies so heavy rain can drain away.
Outside taps and pipes
Insulate outside taps and exposed pipes to stop them freezing.
Fences and sheds
Fix loose panels and secure anything that could blow about in strong winds. The Met Office publishes the season’s storm names each September.
